Week 2: Simone Weil

The Beauty of the World is the Mouth of a Labyrinth

Thank you so much for the inspiring first discussion today. I know this is going to be a great month. I’m attaching the reading for next week, three chapters from Simone Weil’s book Gravity and Grace. I’d recommend reading across three sessions, one chapter at a time, and giving yourself some time to sit with what she is saying. If you are confused, just push on—she repeats her ideas at every turn, so you’ll hear the same thing in different contexts, which helps to understand her overall project.
This book is compiled of her notes that she left in the care of her friend when she passed away at age 34, which accounts for their aphoristic (and incomplete) quality.
Here is a lecture that will provide introductory information about her life:
I’m really looking forward to discussing this next Friday. I hope you all have a great weekend.
