As Editor/Publisher of Saturnalia Books, an independent poetry press based in Philadelphia and New York City, I have read hundreds upon hundreds of manuscripts each year alongside my editorial staff from which we choose six manuscripts to publish for the upcoming year. This workshop will give you an inside view as to what goes on in our decision-making processes, how certain manuscripts end up passing through the gauntlet even while most others fall by the wayside. As you know, entrance/reading fees can rack up quickly! Why throw out good money? This workshop will take you through all the DOs and DONTs. Each participant will also be welcome to submit a “finished” manuscript for possible evaluation during our second afternoon together. The focus will not be on line edits per se but rather on the overall readiness of the thing and what else might need to be attended to to ensure a good thorough read by those waiting on the other side of the lottery of our elections.
Timothy Liu is the author of twelve books of poems, including Down Low and Lowdown: Bedside Bottom-Feeder Blues, forthcoming from Barrow Street in 2023. His previous books have been published by a wide array of presses, including Alice James Books, Copper Canyon Press, Southern Illinois University Press, Talisman House, and University of Georgia Press. Saturnalia Books also published three of his books in those years before Liu stepped down from their author stable to become Editor/Publisher. His poems have been translated into over a dozen languages, and his journals and papers are archived in the Berg Collection at the New York Public Library. Virtual classes are usually based on video conferencing. At the moment we use Zoom. Instructors may utilize email as well as the specific ‘class page’ to share materials.

Each class is different, and Ruth Stone House allows a wide degree of freedom to instructors as to how they run their classes. If you miss a class or have technical problems you can request a video link to the class you missed.
